VILLAGE SUPPLY FLIGHTS

The Khumbu area of Nepal, which includes Mount Everest falls within the Sagarmatha National Park, and since 1979 has been recognised as a World Heritage Site. This is a high mountainous area with numerous villages and narrow valleys with elevations ranging from 9,000 to 18,000ft. It is a popular trekking area for tourists. Main locations to note are Lukla (VNKK) airfield at 9,100ft, Syangboche (VNSB) airstrip at 12,500ft, Thyanghache Monastery and Mount Everest base camp. There are two medical stations staffed by western doctors during the trekking season. A small hospital at Kunde assisted by the Himalayan Trust and a trekker’s aid post at Pheriche under the Himalayan Rescue Association. Syangboche (VNSB) is three days walk from Everest base camp.

Adverse weather conditions have resulted in that aid has to be brought to the villages in the national park area.

The MI-8T will ferry cargo from Khatmandhu, which will be the Main Operating Base to Lukla airfield, the Forward Operating Base. Another MI8-T will distribute the cargo to the villages as indicated in the flight schedules. All helicopter flights will be flown in daylight hours under VFR rules.
