Patrol 1

Flt No. APT01

Description:

Starting at Rainy Pass airstrip, head for Fix 1. This will take you over a grassy hill (the first one you come to) with an area of rocky escarpment - ensure no-one is on this rocky face (climbing is forbidden here).

Approaching Fix 1 you will enter a snowy basin surrounded by tall peaks - check this area for snow boarders, and if any found, ascertain there condition. on reaching Fix 1, land on the snowy ridge if the weather conditions permit. This point is the location of  First Aid Station Alpha. Drop supplies & pick up their trash. Take off and head for Fix 2, descending into the valley.

At Fix 2, turn right and follow the river to Fix 3. We have reports of climbers camping in the area of fix 3. keep an eye out for their landrover & tents. If the fire is lit they'll be ok.

At Fix 3 turn right and head uphill to Fix 4

At Fix 4 you will be over a deep valley.  Turn right & head up the valley towards Fix 5.

Fix 5 is at the base of a mountain, turn left here to Fix 6

At Fix 6 land on the extended mountain side (face uphill when landing) if weather permits. Lift off, turning left and descend into the valley at Fix 7.

At Fix 7, turn right, following the river to Fix 8, where the river bends right. Again, keep low, watching for walkers.

At Fix 8, turn left, climbing to Fix 9

At Fix 9, land on the grassy ridge if weather permits. Rainy Pass Lake can be seen down in the valley.

Lift off and return to Rainy Pass.

NB - do not use runway 11 in poor visibility because of the large hill on the approach.

The above routing may have to be modified depending on the weather at the time.

No flying to be carried out at night unless clear skies and good moonlight is available, and it is an emergency situation.

Patrol 2

Flt No. APT02

Description:

Starting at Rainy Pass airfield, lift to Fix 1, which is a landing point on a saddle between two peaks. This is the location of the local Observatory. We have a contract to provide supplies, and personnel transport when the various crews change shift.

From Fix 1, lift, and descend to Fix 2 in the valley. On arriving at Fix 2, turn right own the valley - staying at a radar altitude of about 150 to 200 feet. Keep a wary out for walkers, and climbers on this section.

At fix 3, turn right to Fix 4, climbing to the landing point on a broad saddle. This is the site of Aid Station Echo.

Lift, and turn left, descending into the valley, and Fix 5. This area is a favourite for walkers, and has also been the site of a couple of aircraft crashes. Keep low as you turn right, and follow the valley to Fix 6.

At Fix 6, turn right, climbing up to Fix 7, the next landing point. This is amongst the trees on a wooded mountain top. Watch those branches !

Lifting from Fix 7, turn right again, and fly across the mountain tops to Fix 8, then turn right to the landing point at fix 9. This is a tricky landing on a knife edge ridge at high altitude, but is where the final Aid Station is, so get used to it !

Finally, lift and turn left, descending to Rainy Pass field.

Patrol 3

Flt No. APT03

Description:

Starting at Rainy Pass airstrip, head for Fix 1. Turn to the right for Fix 2, where, just to the West you will see a small group fo huts. This is a base camp that climbers use to base their expeditions from, and is rented out over the climbing season. Make a low pass to make sure all is well..(no fires etc).

When satisfied, fly to Fix 2, then turn right to Fix three..

Well before reaching Fix three, you should see Aid Station Foxtrot's beacon flashing in the distance. When you arrive, land, and transfer your supplies to the Station. Don't forget to remove any trash !

Fix 4 and 5 are training Fixes to practice your ridge landing techniques. Fly between the two as oftn as you want to hone your skills, but don't spend all day there..we've got a patrol to complete !

Fix 6 & 7 take you over a valley..often filled with low cloud..stay high !

Fix 8 is a large level area of hard packed snow (in the winter). It will be the location of a large hutted camp to be used by organisations such as the Scouts, for adventure training. Transport in and out of this camp will only be by helicopter, so airborne traffic around here will increase some time in the future ! Practice approaches into this area from different directions...could be handy before too long !

Fix 9 is a very fine ridge. This will be the location of another aid station when the camp at Fix 8 is built. Practice your landings here.

Finally. leave fix 9 & head back to Rainy.
