As realistic as flight simulation can get with the multitude of addons, equipment and hardware nothing can quite beat the thrill of flying under full ATC conditions.

Adventure files go some way towards creating a realistic atmosphere but they do have serious limitations.

The only way to truly recreate genuine cockpit conditions is to fly online using the VATSIM  service.

VATSIM is dedicated to providing the flight sim pilot with full ATC control of there flight right from "engine start up" to "shutdown" at your destination.

They provide this service through and network of linked servers worldwide.

All you have to do us log on find the nearest ATC area to your current position and make them aware of your intent.

A program called Squawkbox is required by the pilot. This acts as the interface between your cockpit and ATC. Instructions will appear in the message box of Squawbox, some directed towards yourself, others intended for other aircraft in your vicinity.

Prior to being able to use the service you must register with VATSIM as a pilot. This is totally free and is designed to prevent abuses of the service.

So is taking part in the most exciting, intense and realistic flight sim experience appeals to you then here is what you should do;

  1. Download Squawkbox
  2. Register with VATSIM as a pilot. (This usually takes around 24hrs)
  3. Start up your internet connection & flight sim.
