As the sales of the 727 came to an end in the mid 1970's a replacement for the aircraft became a priority. By 1979 the designers at Boeing had come up with the 757 which was very similar to another fledgling aircraft also under development the 767. From that point on Boeing decided to make the two aircraft as compatible as possible with each other as regards cockpit design and other major components. The 757 first commercial flight was on the 1st January 1983 with Eastern Airlines. Shortly afterward British Airways flew their first 757. In 1985 the 757-200ER was certified for extended range operations which allowed it to cross oceanic distances. |
